A Literary Trip Through Asia

On Saturday, August 20, the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is excited to host A Literary Trip through Asia: a free fall reading program for families and elementary-aged school children in partnership with Asia Society. The event is from 10 am to 12 pm with free parking. The event will feature New York Times Best Seller children’s author Joanna Ho as she joins us at Asia Society Texas in the Museum District (1370 Southmore Blvd Houston, TX 77004) to read her newest picture book, Eyes that Speak to the Stars.

Following the story time, there will be an interactive Q&A session with the author about the book, followed by small group discussions for parents and children regarding the themes from the book, activities to create and take home, free admission to the museum exhibit, and opportunities to purchase books from the author.

VCSA Covid Art Contest

The Vietnamese Cultural and Science Association (VCSA) is hosting an art contest and invites you to submit your entry for consideration!

Please read the instructions and rules below completely before submitting an art piece.

The theme of VCSA Covid Art Contest includes but not limited to:

  1. Contributions of Vietnamese American Houston Health Care workers during Covid

  2. Impacts of Covid on the Houston community as a whole and the Vietnamese community in Houston specifically

  3. Increasing awareness and the importance of Covid vaccination among the Vietnamese community in the Houston larger area

Applicants are to create their own piece in one of two (2) acceptable formats:

  1. Artwork (including drawing and painting)

  2. Digital art (art made using software, computers, or other electronic devices such as drawing and illustrations)


Applicants will be split into three (3) categories for judging:

  1. Elementary (5-10 years old)

  2. Middle School (11-13 years old)

  3. High School (14-18 years old)

The prizes will be awarded as follows:

Artwork Submission Category

  • High School - $500

  • Middle School - $300

  • Elementary - $200


Digital Art Category

  • High School - $500

  • Middle School - $300

  • Elementary - $200



  1. Must be a student attending a school in Alief I.S.D to participate in the VCSA Covid Art Contest

  2. Limit of one entry per applicant

  3. Art pieces may only submitted in a JPEG/JPG, HEIC, PNG, URL link, or PDF

  4. Your entry must be original in concept, design, and execution, not have been previously published, produced, or sold, and not violate any U.S. copyright laws. You may only submit your own artwork that you personally created. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than you is a violation of the contest rules and will not be accepted. Any submission that does meet these requirements will be disqualified
