2013 Youth Excellence Recognition

The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) will sponsor the Sixteenth Annual Vietnamese-American Youth Excellence Recognition Program to commemorate the accomplishments of outstanding Vietnamese-American high school students. VCSA annually recognizes the academic achievements of VietnameseAmerican high school students who graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian of their respective high schools. The program also serves to encourage the younger Vietnamese-American generations to strive for academic excellence and instill a strong sense of civic responsibility among all Vietnamese-Americans in the Greater Houston area. The following is a list of Vietnamese-American students from the Houston area who have graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian for the class of 2013.

The nineteen valedictorians are:

• Linda Nguyen- Alief Taylor High School
• Tiffaney Tran- Cinco Ranch High School
• Andy Tran- Debakey High School
• Som-Mai Nguyen- Eisenhower High School
• Johnny Lu- Elsik High School
• Andrew Mai- Friendswood High School
• Jackie Vu- Hasting High School
• Dianah Pham-Kempner High School
• David Vien- Kerr High School
• Tram Nguyen- Klein Forest High School
• Nicholas Dang Khoa Nguyen- Klein High School
• Kim Uyen Nguyen- Spring Woods High School
• Victor Thanh Hong-Village High School
• Jennifer Hoang- Westchester Academy
• Kaitlin Kargar- Westchester Academy
• Christine Mai- North Shore Senior High School
• Rachel Mai- Tomball High School
• Oscar Dao- Stephen F. Austin High School

The eight salutatorians are: 

• Peter Duy Vu- J. Frank Dobie High School
• Tiffany Nguyen- Alief Taylor High School
• Sophia Le- Cypress Ridge High School
• Thanh V. Nguyen- Deer Park High School
• Carolyn Trieu- Elsik High School
• Toney Duong- Hastings High School
• Briana Nguyen- Klein Forest High School
• Diane Tuyen Duong- Spring Woods High School

In addition to the Recognition Program, there will be a luncheon featuring authentic Vietnamese cuisine, scholarship award presentations, cultural performances featuring beautiful Vietnamese traditions and attire, and a keynote address by Dr. Quyen Chu, Professor of Surgery, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (600) guests are expected to attend, including school district administrators; elected officials, such as the Mayor, City Council Members, county officials, congressional representatives; and local corporation representatives who have continually supported this program throughout the past sixteen years.

Based in Houston, Texas, VCSA was founded in 1990. It has members throughout the U.S. and Canada with chapters in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Diego, Minnesota, Washington DC and Toronto, Canada. VCSA promotes excellence in education, leadership and skills development, and volunteerism through culture and science. The organization encourages multi-generational and cross-cultural collaborations by cultivating civic participation in the mainstream and Vietnamese America.
