College Admission and Financial Aid Workshop

VCSA is sponsoring this college admissions workshop to empower youth to learn more about the college admissions process. We will be covering the following topics:
  • How to choose the right college
  • Financial aid & scholarships
  • SAT/ACT and subject tests
  • Community service and extracurricular activities
  • Grades, AP classes, and dual-credit classes
We will have student representatives from the following schools: Harvard University, Rice University, University of Houston (Main Campus and Downtown), and the University of Texas (Austin).

The format will be short 3-5 minute presentations on each of the subjects above and then we will have general audience Q&A followed up individual Q&A.

Bún Riêu For A Cause

Year 2012 has been a truly challenging year for VCSA due to all the funding and grants cut. In an effort to try our best to recover operational expenses, VCSA will need your support in our upcoming series of initiatives to fund raise.

To kick off the fund raising campaign for VCSA, our beloved president, Ms. Kim Yen Vu has been so kind to offer her house and her talent to cook bún riêu for us and you are cordially invited to the BUN RIEU FOR A CAUSE event with the following details

Cost of one bowl of bun rieu is $25. Please RSVP by sending email to event@vcsa.org or call 281-933-8118 by October 20.

Those of you who RSVP-ed will receive more information about the location of the event.

Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu)

The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Houston will organize the Mid-Autumn Children’s Festival at the Children’s Museum of Houston to celebrate the Vietnamese culture and traditions in the mainstream community. This would also provide the Vietnamese community with the opportunity to learn more about and explore the Children’s Museum of Houston.

              • Moon Cake
              • Lantern Making
              • Tradional Clothing & Drawing Contest

Youth Excellence Recognition

The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) will sponsor the Sixteenth Annual Vietnamese-American Youth Excellence Recognition Program to commemorate the accomplishments of outstanding Vietnamese-American high school students. 

VCSA annually recognizes the academic achievements of Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian of their respective high schools. The program also serves to encourage the younger Vietnamese-American generations to strive for academic excellence and instill a strong sense of civic responsibility among all Vietnamese-Americans in the Greater Houston area.

The following is a list of Vietnamese-American students from the Houston area who have graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian for the class of 2012. 

The sixteen valedictorians are:

In addition to the Recognition Program, there will be a luncheon featuring authentic Vietnamese cuisine, scholarship award presentations, cultural performances featuring beautiful Vietnamese traditions and attire, and a keynote address by Dr. Hai Ho, the Vice President of Global R&D at Newell Rubbermaid. Six hundred (600) guests are expected to attend, including school district administrators; elected officials, such as the Mayor, City Council Members, county officials, congressional representatives; and local corporation representatives who have continually supported this program throughout the past sixteen years.

Based in Houston, Texas, VCSA was founded in 1990. It has members throughout the U.S. and Canada with chapters in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Diego, Minnesota, Washington DC and Toronto, Canada. VCSA promotes excellence in education, leadership and skills development, and volunteerism through culture and science. The organization encourages multi-generational and cross-cultural collaborations by cultivating civic participation in the mainstream and Vietnamese America.

Tickets to the event, open to all members of the community, are $25.00 per person and can be purchased at the VCSA Center, located at 4615 Belle Park Dr, Houston, Texas 77072.

Greatland Investment Scholarship

I. Purpose
To assist and encourage students of Vietnamese descent to excel in scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and community involvement, especially to those who have significant financial need.
II. Outlines
• Greatland Investment Scholarship Foundation will award $500.00 scholarship to graduating high school students who maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA, and have significant financial need.
• Applicants will be evaluated by their scholastic achievements, leadership qualities, community involvement, writing proficiency, and a personal interview for semi-finalists.
II. Qualification
1. Student of Vietnamese descent who is residing in the Greater Houston Metropolitan area, and is graduating from an accredited high school or secondary school in June 2012.
2. Enroll as full time undergraduate studies in an accredited college, university, or an institution of higher learning in the United States in the Fall of 2012.
3. Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Financial Aid Award
  • Scholastic 30%
  • Leadership 10%
  • Essay 10%
  • Financial need 50%
Semi-finalists will be selected from the pool of applicants for a mandatory personal interview with Greatland Investment, Inc., and SCL Realty Investment Group. Criteria for granting the awards will be 70% from the written application, and 30% from interview. Winners will be notified by mail, and the awards will be presented in the 16th Annual Vietnamese-American Youth Excellence Recognition Program on August 5th, 2012
The grading scale for uniformity would be as follows, and should be holistic:
• AP Courses
• SAT/ACT scores
 *** note: consider also non-school associations/org.
• Orgainzation participate
• Cohesiveness of ideas
• Command of language

William Wright Scholarship

Purpose of Award: To promote community involvement.
Amount: $1,000, Non-Renewable
• G.P.A: 3.0 or above with copy of transcript
• One recommendation letter from teacher, school admin, elected official, religious leader, etc. regarding characters and past community service/involvement
• Applicants must submit an essay about themselves.  Discuss what things they have done to help their community or help improve the lives of others.  What compelled them to do these altruistic act(s)?  What are their goals and aspirations in life? How can we encourage other young adults to become more involved and active in the community?
Send your essay and the transcript and application form (see attachment below) to vcsa@vcsa.org before the deadline.

2012 Vietnamese Youth Tobacco Obesity Prevention Summit

  • Gaining knowledge of the bad health effects of tobacco use
  • Learning about Health and Nutrition related issues
  • Help preventing tobacco use among Vietnamese-American youth by educating them about the inherent dangers of tobacco and promoting the positive aspects of a tobacco-free lifestyle

Nicholas C. LePham Citizenship and Public Service Award

Eligibility: Any high school senior in Houston metropolitan area who is of Vietnamese descent and currently applying to college

Scholarships: $1,000 will be awarded

The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) and the LePham family are pleased to invite applicants for the 2012 Nicholas C. LePham Citizenship and Public Service Award. The LePham family and committee is looking to award this scholarship to an aspiring Vietnamese-American student who is able to demonstrate strong civic participation and active citizenship within the community. Changes and improvements can only take place when future leaders organize within the community to address problems. We seek to empower young Vietnamese-Americans to attend college, and to pursue their dreams for further community service and public works.

Applicants will be judged according to their merits in academic, community involvement, leadership, and character. We strongly encourage ALL eligible Vietnamese-American youths to apply. Selection will be conducted by a panel of Vietnamese-American young professionals.  Five (5) finalists will be interviewed in early July 2012, and one (1) winner will be announced by July 15th.

Please help us to spread the word and share with all high school students who are Vietnamese American students.

2012 Len Duong Bonfire Passion (LDBP) Scholarship Contest

About Len Duong Bonfire Passion:

Len Duong Bonfire Passion (LDBP) is a youth team within Vietnamese Culture and Science Association's Houston Chapter that promotes leadership development, volunteerism and cultural awareness. LDBP also provides young Vietnamese-Americans fundraising opportunities to attend Len Duong Leadership Development Camp. Through its many programs, LDBP will help "fuel up", "fire up" and "spread the passion" for positive change in the local community.

Awards: A number of scholarships to provide airfare reimbursement (up to $400 in value) for the winners

Eligibility Criteria:

  • ONLY College or high school students aged 18 and above in Texas may apply
  • College students with a cumulative GPA of 2.80 or higher on a 4-point scale. High school students with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4-point scale.
  • Must plan to attend Len Duong Camp 2012 and be present to accept the award
  • Must be currently active in a Vietnamese community organization or Vietnamese Student Association or some local community organization.


To encourage participation of Vietnamese-American students in volunteerism in their local Vietnamese communities, LDBP will award a number of scholarships to provide airfare reimbursement (up to $400 in value) to outstanding young community activists who want to attend Len Duong Camp 2012 and need financial assistance.

Application Requirements:

  1. Complete and submit a scholarship application (see attachment)
  2. Submit a personal resume demonstrating leadership ability and current active involvement with the community
  3. Submit a brief statement of your expectation of Camp Len Duong 2012
  4. Submit a personal essay that focuses on one of the following topics:
    • Topic 1: What does volunteer service mean to you? Why do you want to serve? Tell us about a specific event that made you proud to be involved with the community
    • Topic 2: Tell us about your career aspirations or special talents such as art and performance. Explain your reason(s) for selecting the particular path or passion for your talent.
    • Topic 3: Tell us about an exceptional hardship, setback or personal experience that has shaped your abilities or future goals.
  5. Qualified applicants will get a phone interview from LDBP (in English or Vietnamese)

After completing all the application requirements, submit all documentation as individual attachments in one (1) email to ldbonfirepassion@gmail.comwith subject heading: “Your Last Name – 2012 LDBP Scholarship Contest.” Hard copies will not be accepted.
