WHAT:

The Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most exciting and popular holidays for Vietnamese families. It’s also called the “Children’s Festival” and it’s celebrated when the moon is the brightest in the fall. Parents use this holiday as an opportunity to show their love and appreciation for their kids.

Join us as we follow tradition and pay tribute to children and the Vietnamese community with a daylong festival in celebration of Tet-Trung-Thu. This celebration coincides with the opening of Dragons and Fairies: Viet Nam Through Folktales, an exhibit created by the Children's Museum of Houston which celebrates Vietnamese culture and heritage.

Special Events:

Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Children’s Festival Celebration with the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA): Join the VCSA with many festival customs, including music, moon cakes, face painting, traditional costumes, lantern contest and a roaring Lion Dance Performance!

Activities

  • Moon Mask: It is customary for children to wear moon face masks during the festival. Design the brightest one and let your imagination shine.
  • Paper Lanterns: Follow tradition as you make vibrant paper lanterns and decorate them with moons and stars.
  • Folktale Fun: Often during festivals, parents tell a favorite folktale to their children. Explore a favorite Vietnamese folktale, Toad is the Uncle of Heaven. Then, send plastic frogs jumping like the delightful character, “Uncle Toad!”
