About the contest

Greetings! Thank you for interested in VCSA art contest. Year 2010 marks a very important milestone for the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA)--Its 20th anniversary! One of the core values of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) is to promote the beautiful culture of Vietnam in North America starting in Houston, Texas. To celebrate its twenty years of service, VCSA will launch its second art contest for primary, middle and high school students in Houston area and its vicinity. The purpose of this contest is to visually collect students’ impression on the Vietnamese culture through the art of painting and drawing. Winners will receive recognition and cash prize from VCSA.

This contest is open to the following school districts with NO restrictions on participants’ nationality and ethnicity.

Due Dates:

Registration and all entries are due on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 at 5:00 PM. Please send your submission along with the Registration form to:

Participant’s Eligibility and format requirements

  1. Must be student of grade 1-5 (division 1) grade 6 to 8 (division 2) or grade 9 to 12 (division 3) currently enrolled in the participating school districts as listed above
  2. Artworks must be presented in 2-D using any drawing or painting media (acrylic, oil, pencil, color pencil, ink, etc.)
  3. Artwork must follow the format guidelines and limits set in this document

Formats and Guidelines:

  1. Minimum entry size is 11"x14" along with a completed registration form.
  2. All submission must be original along with title and one brief statement describing what inspired the art. (Please see the registration form)
  3. Top 3 of each division will receive cash prizes
  4. 10 Honorable Mentions will be announced.
  5. Judges’ decision is final.

All ENTRIES WILL BECOME VCSA PROPERTIES FOR EXHIBITION AND WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

Judges

A judging committee consists of professional artists and VCSA Board member will carefully judge and select the best entries of this contest. The judging criteria include the following criteria:

  1. The quality of the art (40%)
  2. The meaning or inspiration from the statement of original (40%)
  3. Creativity of the art work (20%)

Awards

Each division will have three winning entries with the following cash prize:

  • 1st Place: $150
  • 2nd Place: $100
  • 3rd Place: $50

IMPORTANT DATES:

All entries must be submitted by Tuesday, August 31th, 2010
Winners and award ceremony date will be announced no later than two weeks after the due date.

Restrictions and Limits

  1. One submission per participant
  2. Absolutely Prohibit the submission of artworks and statements which demonstrate defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane or otherwise offensive contents.
  3. Artworks and statements shall not demonstrate any discrimination against age, disability, race, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity
